Paul is still building to the conclusion: all have sinned. And like a doctor delivering a terminal diagnosis—whether or not symptoms are visible, the condition is fatal. This uncomfortable truth is why many avoid both doctors and church. However, the “Gospel” means “good news,” and its power is best understood against the backdrop of the bad news. Like a diamond shown against black velvet to highlight its brilliance, the good news of salvation shines brightest when we first acknowledge our brokenness. This message is personal—God sees and judges the heart, and that applies to all of us.
